The Politics and International Relations department at Florida International University is seeking adjunct lecturers to prepare and deliver relevant instruction using a variety of teaching methods to undergraduate students obtaining a degree, certificate or minor in political science and/or international relations. Instruction may be face-to-face or on-line. The Department particularly needs instructors for classes in American Politics.
Under the direction of the Department’s Associate Chair or assigned mentor:
Review course materials, catalog description, course objectives and learning outcomes, and syllabi prepared by full-time faculty;
Read and review Section V of the Faculty Handbook on “Teaching Policies and Resources” (http://academic.fiu.edu/docs/faculty_handbook.pdf);
Develop course syllabus and outline to conform with university standards, department expectations and university class meeting schedule;
Provide associate chair/mentor and department office manager with copy of course syllabus not later than three weeks before the beginning of the semester, if practicable;
Select appropriate textbooks, notify department staff of book selections, and timely place book orders with university bookstore;
Review any textbook or other course material changes with the associate chair/mentor and other full-time faculty teaching the course;
Revise and update course content as needed;
Facilitate class instruction, discussion sessions, presentations and other class activities;
Teach the assigned course in accordance with learning objectives and course outline;
Maintain records of enrollment, attendance (if appropriate), and grades;
If face-to-face instruction, hold class each day for the full time allotted by the university;
If on-line instruction, provide at least weekly Adobe Connect (or other university-approved technology) lectures with weekly assignments and timely feedback;
Meet with the associate chair/mentor to discuss all aspects of the course including student progress and curriculum development;
Evaluate student performance using a variety of measurement tools including, but not limited to: examinations that include subjective and objective questions, research and analytical papers, group projects or oral presentations;
Be available for student consultation through office hours or scheduled appointments (face-to-face or online), by phone or by email;
Provide students with prompt feedback on assignments and course completion using Blackboard or by returning graded materials to students;
Timely submit final grades into FIU Panthersoft system and Blackboard, if appropriate;
Properly administer student evaluations of instruction (face to face) and encourage students to submit course evaluations (on-line); and
Submit all grade rosters for all students, any retained coursework, and other course materials to the department manager at the end of the semester.
