Position Description:
The Department of Art + Art History at Florida International University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure earning Visiting Assistant Professor of Painting. Salary is commensurate with experience. The position is an initial one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal.
The successful candidate will be an artist with a significant record of research/creative practice, demonstrating an interdisciplinary approach to painting, and a strong record of professional achievement. The individual will possess the ability to cross disciplines in teaching, with strong skills in both analog and digital forms. Experience with new technologies and the ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teaching and critique are expected.
Preference will be given to candidates showing evidence of exceptional teaching, academic leadership experience or potential, and excellent organizational and communication skills. The successful candidate will provide evidence of a distinct and progressive vision for curriculum development that capitalizes upon the transformative capacity of contemporary art and design practices.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain an active creative research practice with a record of achievement.
- Teach courses primarily in painting including undergraduate independent studies and thesis.
- Initial teaching responsibilities include five undergraduate courses per academic year.
- Develop painting curricula emphasizing a diversity of conceptual and technical practices.
- Student mentoring and service to the department and university
- Ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teaching and interact with all studio students in critiques and studio visits.
- The successful candidate may also be expected to contribute to the Foundations program.
Preferred Qualifications:
- MFA degree in painting, multidisciplinary arts, or related fields by the start date of employment
- Experience collaborating with other university faculty on curriculum development.
- Experience teaching with new technologies across disciplines at the college level.
Minimum Qualifications:
- MFA in art or a design-related field by the start date of employment
- Ability to engage in the theoretical and critical discourses of contemporary art and design in practice and pedagogy.
- Ability to teach a range of skill sets including unconventional methods and approaches.
- College-level teaching experience
