Position Description
The Department of Art + Art History at Florida International University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure-earning Assistant Teaching Professor of Graphic Design. Initial salary is commensurate with experience. Employees classified as Assistant Teaching Professor are eligible for full benefits and promotion.
We are seeking candidates with a vibrant studio and/or professional practice, and an awareness of critical issues facing contemporary art and design practice today. Experience with new technologies and the ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teaching and critique are expected.
Preference will be given to candidates showing evidence of exceptional teaching, academic leadership experience or potential, and excellent organizational and communication skills. The successful candidate will provide evidence of a distinct and progressive vision for curriculum development that capitalizes upon the transformative capacity of contemporary art and design practices.
Responsibilities
Teaching responsibilities typically include eight 3-credit undergraduate graphic design courses per academic year (four each semester). Research and creative activities are encouraged, but not required. Faculty members in the department also participate in student mentorship and in academic service to the department and/or university.
The successful candidate will provide leadership in the development and shaping of the Graphic Design curriculum in a diverse department committed to critical inquiry across creative disciplines. Opportunities exist to teach in the candidate’s expertise area, the MFA program, independent studies, and undergraduate theses.
Preferred Qualifications
- MFA or Doctoral degree in graphic design, multidisciplinary arts, or a closely related field by the start date of employment
- Experience collaborating with other university faculty on curriculum.
- Experience in college-level teaching with new technologies across disciplines.
Minimum Qualifications
- MFA in art or a design-related field by the start date of employment
- Ability to engage in the theoretical and critical discourses of contemporary art and design in practice and pedagogy.
- Ability to teach a range of skill sets including digital and analog as well as unconventional methods and approaches.
- College-level teaching experience
